insightPeople inside Eritrea, especially the capital, are saying that Eritrean Forum for National Dialogue’s (EFND’s) activities are gaining popularity. Residents of the capital say that EFND efforts to unite all democratic Eritrean movements has been received very well by the public who are eagerly waiting for signs of change. Recent efforts to establish recognition for Eritrean democratic movements in the Horn region have also been well received. They said they feel hopeful that the brutal dictatorship in the country might soon end.

In public places people are openly discussing the Nairobi conference arranged by EFND and the meeting with Ethiopian PM Hailemariam Desalegn that aimed at beginning the process of creating partnership for Eritrean democratic movements with countries in the region. The government in Eritrea has viewed these recent developments as threats to its existence.

The Nairobi conference had aimed at uniting all Eritrean democratic movements while the special delegation’s visit to Ethiopia clarified the country’s stand for a peaceful transition to a democratic government in Eritrea.

These two big developments are bringing quick support to the opposition movements outside the country and can empower the progress of their struggle.

Understanding that EFND is working to answer all possible scenarios for change in Eritrea has given relief to the public that work is being done to ensure the continuity of a sovereign and territorially integrated nation. EFND’s strategic outlook that goes beyond the traditionally narrow and short term views of many opposition political groups is being seen as a distinct sign of the Forum’s practical plans.

EFND radio broadcasts have been very influential by providing balanced and important topics and news to the public inside the country. Its programs have become the reference point for many cadres inside the country. EFND radio programs provide in-depth analysis on many important topics and the most up-to-date news on events concerning Eritrea. Many people inside the country depend on the radio’s programs to understand the direction of current affairs and as a guide to active opposition.

The Eritrean government is working hard to block the radio in Eritrea, and has been talking with the broadcast providers ArabSat and NileSat. The government has also locked EFND radio on all satellite receivers in government offices.

The government has set up a task force to follow EFND activities, and is already working to block EFND radio posts from opposition websites and social media and ready to launch troll attacks against such posts as they occur.

The task force is currently studying the implications of the special delegation’s meeting with the Ethiopian prime minster. It is studying EFND activities after the meeting and following its radio programs to analyze the particulars of the meeting.
